What changed

Odesa was laid out to a plan at the end of the eighteenth century, and its centre has kept that grid. The City Theatre in the archive's first photograph burned down in 1873; the Opera House that replaced it opened in 1887.

The Boulevard Stairs down to the port, finished in 1841, were renamed the Potemkin Stairs in 1955, fifty years after the mutiny on the battleship Potemkin — the stairs Sergei Eisenstein made famous in his film of 1925.
