Old photos of Prague

A city the war mostly spared, so its photographs change slowly — and one of the few here whose busiest decade is the last, the 1990s.

Counted in a small square around each place — about 250 metres each way — so a number is every photograph taken there, of the place itself or of the street beside it. Each place opens the map on that spot.

What changed

Prague came through the Second World War with its old centre largely standing, so the change in these photographs is slower and smaller. The Josefov ghetto was cleared for new apartment blocks between the 1890s and the 1910s, and St Vitus Cathedral, begun in 1344, was finally completed in 1929 — the view of Charles Bridge from 1856 below shows it still unfinished.

The archive's busiest Prague decade is its last: the 1990s, after the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
